Disabled people often find it difficult to get the skills they need for employment in the open jobs market.

John Leech has joined fellow MPs in calling on the government to save Remploy factories for disabled workers from being shut.

Trade unions and disability groups have reacted with anger to the news that both of Greater Manchester's Remploy factories face the axe. The move will leave hundreds of disabled workers without jobs.

"Remploy does a brilliant job of employing disabled people who would otherwise find it difficult to find a job," said John Leech MP. "People with disabilities often find it tough to find employment in the open labour market."

"It is important to support integration into the mass labour market but the closure of these factories is a step backwards," he continued. "The company offers the chance for people to gain the skills they need to support themselves when finding a job."

Notes to editors:

John Leech MP has signed Early Day Motion 1573, the text of which is set out below.

REMPLOY FACTORY CLOSURES

24.05.2007

Efford, Clive

That this House supports Remploy employees and their trade unions in challenging the closure of Remploy factories and top heavy management structures within the network; notes that an independent financial report demonstrates that Remploy could efficiently remain within their funding envelope of £555 million; recognises that Remploy factories offer a unique opportunity to many who cannot be employed in a mainstream environment; and calls upon the Government to use the ensuing consultation period seriously to assess the option of additional funding in order that the Remploy factory network continue to offer secure employment and also be developed into an innovative training resource for disabled employees who could be supported in the transition to mainstream employment.
