'Land Girls deserve recognition' - John Leech MP

5.10.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 4th Feb 2008

MP for Manchester Withington, John Leech, is encouraging women who served in the Women's Land Army or Women's Timber Corps during World War I and II to apply for a new badge of honour.

John Leech MP said:

'It is only right that we pay tribute to those women who worked selflessly during periods of conflict to provide food and timber for the nation.

'At the peak in 1943, there were 80,000 Land Girls who contributed so greatly to the war effort and I would be delighted if surviving members contact me to apply for the badge.'

The new badge is being specially designed by the Garter King of Arms and will bear the Royal Crown. It is expected that the first badges will be available by early summer.

If you would like to apply, or would like more information, please contact John Leech MP, 8 Gawsworth Avenue, East Didsbury, Manchester M20 5NF, telephone 0161 434 3334 or email leechj@parliament.uk

Applicants will need to supply date of birth, approximate dates of service in the Women's Land Army or Women's Timber Corps and the location at which they were stationed. Badges will not be able to be awarded to spouses or families of deceased members except where death has occurred after 6 December 2007.
